Program Description

The 50+ Program is an initiative started in 2010 by the Community Connections Department to assist mature newcomers to integrate and adapt into their new community.

Funding for this program has come from the New Horizons for Seniors Initiative and from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

During COVID-19, we are currently offering services online.

The 50+ Program offers the following services:

  • Group activities supporting personal wellbeing, fitness, knowledge transfer and cross-cultural understanding.
  • Craft groups and recreational activities.
  • Group volunteering projects: Cooking for the community, gardening, sewing and/or knitting for local charities, etc.
  • Friendly knitting circle, meets weekly to work in collective projects that are donated to local community agencies.
Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

Any immigrant to Canada, newcomer or oldcomer is welcome to join the 50+ Group.

Community members, under 50 years of age, interested in the activities and project organized by the 50+ Group are welcome to participate as volunteers and skills facilitators.

Our centre offers full time Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for adults of varying levels of language ability. Our LINC/ESL program facilitates students’ social, cultural and occupational integration into Canadian life.

Our Bridging Barriers to Newcomer Mental Health program provides mental health support to newcomers in Niagara who are experiencing language and other social barriers to accessing mainstream mental health services.

Immigrant professionals who join in the Mentorship Program will be connected to career mentors in their field through one-on-one and group sessions.

The Settlement Department assists newcomers to meet their immediate and longer-term settlement needs, including information and orientation to the community, referrals to community and social services, solution-focussed counselling and assistance with settlement plans.
